I always make my Christmas cards if I can. This year’s design was partly inspired by the work of Masaru Emoto. I made these cards with a lot of love, and made sure that intuitively I was “on” and present during each step of the process. I wanted to literally send love to others without just writing about it inside the card.

These are the squares I’ve made. There is no deadline, timeline, framework, pattern or scheme here. There is only a delightful inner awareness of each little part, as it relates to and turns into a whole. The Tao Te Ching says that a journey of a thousand (?) miles starts with one step. Well, the creation of this queen (?) sized quilt started and progresses by choosing and measuring each single square of fabric.

Welcome to the season of inner exploration and peace. The tides are out and we can breathe a huge sigh of relief as we hunker down under the covers for a long rest.

Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy.
Leo Buscaglia
Do you ever find yourself worrying about imagined threats? It is the worst feeling, especially if you are a particularly imaginative person. Luckily, because you are imaginative, you are just as good at recovering from this anxiousness as [...]

The mica at Harvard Quarry looked like disco ball wreckage strewn all over the place. It was like walking on mirror shards, broken bottles and diamonds. I sat down in it and allowed myself to be taken in by the exotic twinkles and warm sunshine. I brought some home with me and ground it down. The sprinkles stick beautifully to printing ink. Difficult to photograph, but dazzling to the eye and totally fun to play with!

This watercolor had exciting moments along the way but I managed to cover most of them up by the time it was “finished”. But it helped me figure out some of the visual problems that come when trying to depict something that looks so unreal to begin with — the landscape in Abiquiu, NM. This is the first time I made a watercolor without brushes! All you need are watercolor pencils, some drinking water, and a finger for puddling the two together.

Allow the flow

I bought a set of watercolor pencils and some new watercolor paper a couple days ago. I was so exciting about new materials and now I am getting to know them through experimentation. How do they respond to water and how do the colors mix when you want them to, but not when you don’t want them to? So far they are a delightful vehicle for exploring how to go with the flow.

The key to overcoming the critic within is to relax and be yourself. You already have everything you need. You can make a creative expression simply by picking up the pebbles at your feet and arranging them in a pleasing pattern. Just begin where you are. You don’t have to fortify yourself with materials or belongings or power or knowledge or permission. You’re complete and ready right now. Go ahead and play, make stuff, enjoy what you see in front of you, interface with the tools that your environment offers freely for your bliss.

Every day you are free to choose which direction you want to go. Be good to yourself. You can ALWAYS give yourself what you need. I made this drawing because I felt myself swirling toward a scary hole of self-doubt and I knew I didn’t want to go down that drain. What message do you need to hear today?

Drawing can help you travel back to a time or toward a particular fantasy.
